Chapter 11: What Aldo Knew

Aldo ended the party with one raised hand.

The band packed up. Seventy guests filed out past the cake, and not one of them looked at the screen.

Stefano had taken Bianca's arm and left through the kitchen before the second table stood.

"My study," Aldo said to me. "Now. Luca too."

His study was on the top floor of the building, above the loading docks. There was a desk, a leather couch and a photograph of two boys in school uniforms on the wall.

The older boy was Luca. He was smiling with his whole face.

Aldo shut the door and did not sit.

"Ask me," he said.

"Did you know?"

"Within six hours."

Luca went very still beside me.

"Stefano called me at one in the morning," Aldo said. "I drove to your house. I found my elder son asleep in his bed with a woman who was not his wife. He couldn't be woken up. I shook him."

"You didn't call an ambulance," Luca said.

"No."

"You saw me drugged."

"I saw what Stefano told me, standing in the hall in his socks. He said it was a prank that had gone wrong. He said he never meant for Valeria to fall."

I put my hand on the back of the couch.

"A prank," I said.

"He was twenty-eight."

"He killed my baby."

"Valeria." Aldo's voice broke, once, and he got it back. "I thought about it for an hour. A man in my position has two sons and a company. One of them had a good heart. He'd have forgiven his brother and called the police on him in the same breath."

"So you picked."

"I picked the one who would stay."

Luca said nothing at all.

I had thought Luca could not look any worse than he had on the church steps. He could.
