Chapter 13: What I Signed

Luca's POV

They put me in a room with a steel bench and no window.

I sat with my hands on my knees. My wrist still rang where the cuff had been.

Nobody came for four hours.

I used the time. I had something to look at.

Three years ago a lawyer put a pen in my hand in a hospital parking lot, and I signed where he pointed.

I did not read one line.

I did not call Valeria. I did not go back inside and force the door. I did not ask her mother a single question.

For three years I had held it against Valeria that she never asked me anything.

I had never asked her either.

That was my share, and I sat there and took it.

The door opened.

The big officer from the street stood in it with his pad. "Sorrentino. Come with me."

"Am I charged?"

"Come and see."

He took me to a room with a laptop on the table. A heavy man in a Patriots shirt sat beside it with his arms folded.

He was the neighbor who had held up his phone.

"I walked in at seven," he said. "I don't like being a prop in somebody's show."

The officer turned the laptop to face me and pressed a key.

I watched my brother say "Not on camera" and drive his own face into a door.

It was clear. It was loud. It ran from the porch light to the sirens.

"Broken nose," said the officer. "Done by the door. Not by you."

"Then why was I in a cell all night?"

"Because at midnight I had a bleeding man and a witness who swore to it." He tapped the pad. "The witness changed her mind at two. She called the desk. She said she wasn't sure what she saw."
