Chapter 22: The Car

"No," I said.

Stefano tilted his head.

"No? You haven't heard the offer."

"I heard it once already, in this same car. I'm not getting in."

The driver sat behind the wheel with both hands on it. He was the same man who had sat there on my wedding day.

He looked at me in the mirror and gave me a very small nod.

Luca stepped up beside me.

"Move away from the car, Stefano."

"Or what? You'll put me against a wall again?" Stefano laughed. "There's nobody filming tonight, brother."

Behind us the banquet doors opened.

Guests came out onto the steps in twos and threes, in their jackets and their good shoes.

Nobody came down.

Stefano's eyes went over them. He saw the phones, the white faces, his father's lawyer at the top of the steps.

Then his hand shot out.

He closed it around my wrist, the same wrist, and yanked.

I went forward into the open door.

Luca lunged and caught my coat. Stefano kicked him in the knee, and Luca went down on the asphalt.

Stefano shoved me across the back seat, and climbed in after me, and slammed the door.

The locks thunked down.

"Drive!" he shouted at the driver. "Airport. Now!"

The driver did not move.

"Sir," he said. "I don't think I will."

"I'm paying you!"

"You booked this car for ten minutes and a short ride to the Marriott. That's what I was told." He turned slowly in his seat. His face was calm. "And I'd like you to know, sir, that this car records."

Stefano's eyes went to the small black lens on the dashboard.

It had a red light on it.

"Turn that off," he said.

"I can't. The company set it. Last time I got in trouble for it." He glanced at me. "Miss Morandi, are you all right?"
