Chapter 10: The Brother's Ultimatum

Quinton's POV

I did not sleep.

At five I gave up and stood in the kitchen with a glass of water.

Her cake dome was still on the counter, empty now except for crumbs.

I looked at it for a long time.

She was asleep behind a door I had put a lock on, on her side, so that I could not open it.

I had given her that lock to keep from walking through that door.

At eight I was in my office on the thirty-first floor.

At nine I called my brother up.

Dexter came in without knocking and dropped into the chair across from my desk.

He had the face on that he used on investors.

"Big night," he said. "Mother's been on the phone. Everyone wants to know if my brother has finally lost his mind."

"Close the door."

"It's closed."

"Sit up."

He sat up.

"Here is what happens now," I said. "By Friday, you tell her the truth. All of it, to her face. The apartment, the eight months, what you told Paloma, and whether there is a child."

"Or what?"

"Or I do it for you, and not kindly."

He laughed.

"You can't," he said. "You'd have to explain why you knew."

"I'll explain."

"Will you?"

I said nothing.

He leaned back and studied me.

I let him.

"You're really doing this," he said. "You're really putting her in my seat in front of everyone. Playing the white knight."

"Tell her the truth."

"What truth? That I was unhappy? Everyone knows I was unhappy. She hung on me. She was so grateful, Quinton, it was suffocating."
