Chapter 5: Terms in the Rain

It was raining when I came out of the townhouse.

I had left my umbrella at Bree's, and I stood on the top step with my bag held over my head.

Dexter caught up to me on the sidewalk.

"Lin, wait. Let's talk about this like adults."

"Which adult is having your baby?"

"It isn't what she said."

"You didn't deny it in there."

"I was in shock." He reached for my arm. "We can fix this. Come home and I'll explain."

"Don't touch me."

I said it quietly.

He took his hand back.

"You're making the biggest mistake of your life," he said.

"I made it seven years ago."

A heavy black coat dropped over my shoulders.

It was dry and warm, and it smelled of cedar and cold air.

Quinton stood behind me with the rain running off his hair.

He had his hands in his pockets.

He did not look at Dexter.

"My car is at the corner," he said to me.

"I'm taking the subway."

"It's raining."

"I noticed."

He looked at me for a moment.

"Then let me drive you to the subway," he said.

I almost laughed.

I walked past Dexter to the corner and got into the passenger seat of Quinton's car.

The heater was already running.

He pulled out into the traffic without a word.

The windshield wipers beat steadily across the glass.

"You knew for eight months," I said.

"Yes."

"You knew and you sat across from me at Thanksgiving."

"I did."

"You watched me carve a turkey."

"I asked him to tell you. I gave him until your birthday."
