Chapter 13: The Morning After
There was a casserole on my front porch at seven the next morning.
It sat on the welcome mat in a blue glass dish with foil crimped over the top.
An index card was taped to the foil in Mrs. Albrecht's looping hand.
Tuna noodle. Eat something. Don't you dare return the dish until you've used it.
I stood on the porch in my work shoes and read it twice.
In sixteen years, I had carried more than four hundred casseroles up other women's steps.
Nobody had ever carried one up mine.
By the time I got the dish into the refrigerator, my daughter had written the date in her notebook.
"That's the first one," she said.
"It's the first one," I said. "Don't count them."
"I'm going to count them," she said.
Hartwell Family Dental opens at eight.
At ten to, the waiting room was already full, and nobody was there for a cleaning.
Seven women sat in a row under the framed tooth chart, with their purses on their knees.
