Chapter 11: The Invoice

The trust's lawyer found the answer in forty minutes.

She laid a bank notary's journal on the hood of my father's car, under the courthouse lights.

"Seven years ago," she said, "Mr. Pruden signed the pledge at his own branch. In person. The notary logged his driver's license and took his thumbprint."

She turned the book around.

There was a small black smudge in a box, and a date.

"You can forge a signature, Ms. Stannard. You can't forge a thumbprint."

"Then he lied to the State's Attorney."

"He lied under oath. It's the most expensive sentence he's ever signed."

My father looked at the print for a long time.

"I want that framed," he said.

Nick stood a little apart, with his phone to his ear.

He ended the call and came over.

"Brent is going live tonight at seven," he said. "On Homewrecker Hunters. An exclusive interview. His lawyer's idea."

"Where?"

"The redhead's loft. Her producer posted the address in the chat an hour ago."

"He wants to say it to three hundred thousand people," I said. "That I forged it."

"Yes."

"Then I'll go."

"Leigh."

"I want to be in the room."

"I'm coming," Nick said.

I turned to him.

"You said nothing personal until Friday."

"It's still Thursday." His mouth moved. "I'll stand by the wall. I'll look like furniture."

"You've never looked like furniture in your life."

My father coughed into his glove.

"I'm also coming," he said. "I'll bring my glasses."

At seven, we climbed to the redhead's loft on the third floor of an old printing house.

It had exposed brick and a rented sofa.

A ring light on a stand. Two cameras. A banner that said HOMEWRECKER HUNTERS: THE TRUTH EXCLUSIVE.
