Chapter 12: The Jar

The kitchen was full.

The cook stood at the stove with her arms folded and a maid held a tray against her chest.

Four of Tullio's men leaned along the back wall with their coats open.

Nobody had made a sound since he had spoken.

"Good morning, Dr. Winslow," Tullio said again, and smiled.

I stayed where I was, in the doorway, with my hair still loose from Rocco's bed.

"I don't know who you mean," I said.

"Of course you do. Carson told me everything on Saturday night, after dinner. He was very upset."

He stirred the honey in the jar with the spoon.

"Ada Winslow," Tullio said to the room, in his warm, easy voice. "Cardiac surgeon. She put her hands inside my father's chest four years ago, and he never woke up."

The maid's tray rattled.

"The family wanted her named in every paper in the city," Tullio said. "My brother signed the letter himself. And now she's living in his house."

Somebody by the wall muttered a curse.

"She isn't a guest," Tullio said. "She's a widow-maker with a grudge. And she's sleeping with him."

I walked across the kitchen.

I did it slowly, with my hands in plain sight.

Every man by the wall straightened.

I stopped beside the table and looked down at the jar.

It was gold and green, the same label as the one in the locked cabinet.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"The pantry." Tullio spread his hands. "A spare tin from the same basket. Carson's firm sends several every quarter."

"We locked the first one in a cabinet."

"Did you? Gia must have forgotten to tell me about the others."

"Put it down."

"Why?" he said. "It's honey."

"Put it down, Tullio."

He held my eyes.

Then, very deliberately, he put the spoon in his mouth and swallowed.
