Chapter 13: The Terrace

Bree moved first.

She pressed the back of her wrist to her mouth and made a small, broken sound.

It was a very good sound.

"Howard," she said, and found him at the edge of the crowd. "That man has a restraining order against him."

Heads turned toward Anthony.

"He was violent with me," Bree said, shaking. "A court told him to stay away from me. Please, someone call security."

Nobody moved.

Anthony did not raise his voice.

"The order ran two years," he said. "It ended last spring. A judge granted it on a petition I was never served with, while I was sitting in a hospice in Edinburgh."

"That's a lie."

"You know the date. You wrote it on the form."

Her mouth opened and closed.

Howard set down his champagne.

"Nobody is calling security," he said. "Mr. Crane is a guest of this firm."

Clark stepped up behind her.

His face was gray.

"Bree," he said.

"Not now, baby."

Two hundred people had just heard a woman call my husband baby, ten feet from his wife.

Bree heard it too, a second late.

She lifted her chin, pasted on a laugh that nobody joined, and said she needed some air.

She walked out with her back straight and her hand over the ring.

Clark stood where she left him.

"Go home, Clark," Howard said, not unkindly.

Clark looked at me.

I looked back and said nothing, and he went.

When I turned, Anthony was gone.

I found him on the terrace, at the far end, with both hands on the stone rail and the city lit up below him.

It was cold out there.
