Chapter 9: Live
The studio went still.
The anchor held the printed email up to the camera.
"Ms. Kehoe," he said. "Did you send it?"
Dani looked at the page for a moment.
She did not look afraid.
She looked like a woman reading a bug report.
"No," she said. "But I'd like to see it properly. May I?"
"It's right here."
"That's a printout. I mean the original, the one with the delivery stamp." She leaned toward his microphone. "Every email carries a hidden line that says which computer sent it."
She waited a beat.
"Anyone who forges one has to type that line by hand, and they almost always get it wrong."
The anchor glanced at his producer in the glass booth.
The producer shrugged.
"Please," Dani said. "Put it on the big screen. If I'm lying, it'll take ten seconds to prove."
There was a long, awful pause.
Then the wall of tickers behind her flickered, and a line of gray text filled it from corner to corner.
Dani read it quietly, line by line.
"Received from the Halloway Systems guest network. Floor forty."
A murmur went through the studio audience.
"I've never been on the guest network," Dani said. "I turned my company laptop in on Friday. The email came from a computer on floor forty, the executive floor, at two-fourteen on a Sunday morning."
"Anyone could have used it," the anchor said, a little desperately. "How would we know whose computer?"
"We wouldn't," Dani said. "That's the problem with email."
She turned her head toward the audience.
