Chapter 10: Invoice

Duncan's POV

My District Attorney didn't ask me to sit down.

He stood at the window of his office in Deering County with his back to me.

The lights of the parking lot made a long shadow of him on the carpet.

"I sent you a message," he said.

"I read it."

"Then why are those photographs still in the record?"

"Because the court has them, and I can't take them out."

"You can move to strike. You can say they were entered by mistake."

"They weren't a mistake. They were evidence the State had and never produced."

He turned around.

He was a heavy man who had known Marshall Kershaw for twenty years, and he had never raised his voice to me before tonight.

"Marshall Kershaw put me in this chair," he said. "I don't intend to lose his county because you can't stand to lose a case."

"I'm not trying to lose it. I'm trying to try it."

"You're off at nine tomorrow morning. Another assistant will take the file."

"Then he'll get a clean one," I said. "I'll put every page in order tonight."

I walked out before he could answer, and my hand was not steady on the door.

It wasn't the District Attorney that bothered me. I had been steady in front of worse men.

It was the cut across her palm, and her pulse jumping under my thumb.
