Chapter 19: Her Mother's Pearls

The arraignment was set for Saturday at nine, in Deering County, because no judge in Marlow County could hear a case against its own District Attorney.

I sat in the second row of the gallery in my gray dress.

The ankle monitor was still on. The judge had allowed me this one more morning.

Frances sat on my left. On my right was Melanie, in a plain black dress with her hair pulled back and no lipstick at all.

She had been wearing the pearls every day for a month.

She wore them this morning too.

The room was full. The press had taken both side rows, and the deputy attorney general sat alone at the State's table with a thin folder.

Marshall came in through the side door in a dark suit.

His lawyer walked beside him. It was the man in the nine hundred dollar suit, the one I had fired in open court.

He did not look at me. He had the face of a man who had been paid in advance.

The clerk read the charges in a flat voice.

Forgery of a public record. Tampering with evidence in a pending case. Obstruction of justice.

"How does your client plead?" the judge asked.

"Not guilty, Your Honor," the lawyer said. "Mr. Kershaw is the elected District Attorney of Marlow County, and these are political charges, brought three days before an election."

"Noted," the judge said. "Does the State have anything on bail?"

The deputy attorney general stood.

"Your Honor, the State asks to be heard on one more matter first. It has a witness who wishes to make a statement on the record. Her counsel is present."
