Chapter 13: Every Night at Eleven

I didn't scream.

I wish I had, because the quiet was worse.

I stood in my own front hall with my dress half off my shoulder, and I looked at the man I had just kissed.

"Say it again," I said.

"Marlo."

"Say what you did."

"I called you every night," he said. "For three years. I said I was Hamish."

My hands were shaking, so I pressed them flat against the wall.

"Then he never said it."

He didn't ask what I meant.

"Never said what?"

"I love you." My voice came out thin. "On the phone, at the end of every call. You said it. You said it a thousand times."

"I said it."

"As him."

"I said it in his name," he said. "But I meant it, Marlo. Every one of them was mine."

That should have helped.

It was the thing that made me sick.

"Don't you dare," I said. "Don't you stand in my house and hand me that as if it fixes anything."

"I'm not."

"I told you what I never told anyone. I told you how I cried at my father's grave, and how I couldn't sleep in our bed. I cried into that phone, and you let me say all of it to a dead man."

His face went gray under the beard.

"I let you say it to me."

"You had no right to be the one who heard it!"

It echoed up the stairwell.

He didn't flinch this time.

"No," he said. "I didn't."

I looked at his mouth, which I had been kissing a minute ago, and at the burned hand that had been on my back.
