Chapter 22: Shareholders

Orin's POV

Skye called back at six in the morning.

Her house had been entered while she slept, she said, and her laptop was gone, and her work email was locked from the inside.

"They didn't find the stick," she said. "It was in my bra. I slept in it."

Marlo laughed until she cried.

The Lindmark freight hall stood by the ore docks, a long brick room with a low stage and rows of folding chairs.

By ten there were two hundred people in them.

There were shareholders and captains' widows and old deckhands I half knew, and reporters along the back wall.

My mother sat on the stage at the center of the table, in black, with her handbag at her feet.

The man who laughed at everything she said sat at her right.

Her new lawyer sat at her left.

Marlo walked down the center aisle in her good gray coat with her chin up.

I walked beside her.

I had not worn my cap.

It was the first time in seven years I had walked into a room with my whole face showing.

I heard the room draw in a breath, and I kept walking.

We took the two seats in the front row.

"Let's begin," said Bernadette, tapping the microphone. "Before the annual business, we have a motion concerning a shareholder, Mrs. Marlo Lindmark, who has knowingly harbored a fraud and who I move to bar from voting."

"Second," said the man who laughed.

"All in favor?"

"Point of order," said the woman with the silver hair, from her end of the table.
