Chapter 4: The Couch Rule
In the morning I found him asleep sitting up on my couch, with his boots still on.
He had refused the bed.
He had refused the pillow and the quilt, and in the end he had taken the quilt and sat on top of it.
I stood in the kitchen doorway with my coffee and looked at the back of his head.
The hair at his nape was the right dark brown.
The ball cap lay on the cushion beside him, and I had never seen it off.
He woke all at once.
"Morning," he said, and pulled the cap back on.
"You don't have to wear that in my house."
"I'd rather."
So I put my cup down on the table and said it before I lost my nerve.
"I need terms."
He sat up straight.
"Anything."
"You sleep on the couch. You don't touch me, and you don't ask me to touch you, until I know who you are."
"Who I am," he said, "is the man you married."
"Then it won't take long to be sure."
He studied me for a moment, and then he nodded.
"Okay," he said. "Couch. No touching. Until you're sure."
He agreed too fast, and I noticed it and put it away.
I told myself it was shame.
Skye arrived at eight with a paper bag of donuts and her badge still clipped to her scrubs from the night shift.
She put the bag down on the table and looked him over from boots to cap.
"Okay," she said. "Humor me."
"Skye."
"I was your maid of honor. I held her bouquet for six hours." She turned a chair around and sat on it backward. "What song did you two dance to at the reception?"
