Chapter 7: Norma's Kitchen Table

"It's the same picture," I told the man in Columbus.

"It can't be."

"Mine came in November. Yours came in August. She never said it was an old one."

He breathed in slowly.

"Maybe she just sends the one she likes best."

"Maybe," I said.

Neither of us believed it.

"I'm going to sit down," he said. "I'll call you tomorrow."

He hung up.

I sat in the garage with the two pictures on my phone and my grandmother's locket knotted around my neck until the space heater clicked off.

Sunday morning, Norma put Mitch and me at her kitchen table.

She'd made biscuits and gravy, which she only does for funerals and bad news.

"Eat first," she said.

We ate first.

Then she put a letter on the table between us.

A courier company from Cincinnati wanted both routes.

They'd pay seventy-six thousand dollars cash, no note, the day after my deadline.

"I didn't ask them," Norma said. "They heard I was retiring. They do this."

"What do they do with the routes?" I said.

"Put their own drivers in. Cheaper ones." She looked at us over her glasses. "My drivers get two weeks' notice and a fruit basket."

"So sell to me," Mitch said. "I've got my half today."

"And who carries your other half? Me? For three years?" Norma shook her head. "I'm moving to Florida someday, Mitchell. I'm not chasing a note from a beach chair."
