Chapter 13: Bed Rest
Aaron didn't say a word in the car.
He drove the whole way back to Brooklyn Heights ten miles under the limit, with both hands on the wheel.
At the brownstone he looked up at the four flights of stairs, then at me.
"Don't," I said.
"Flat on your back. She said it. I heard her."
"I can climb stairs, Aaron."
"Not today."
He picked me up.
He carried me up four flights, breathing hard by the third landing, apologizing to every step.
"You're going to kill yourself," I said into his shoulder.
"Then you'll have to testify about it."
He laid me on the bed with my coat still on and stood there looking at me.
"Go to work," I said.
"No."
"You have a job."
"I have a laptop." He pushed his glasses up. "And a car."
He was gone two hours.
When he came back he had three cardboard boxes, a roll of tape and a corkboard the size of a door.
He'd brought his wall.
He taped it up across from the bed, every company on the Castellucci file, the eleven restaurants, the linen plant, the concrete, red string between them.
My annual report photo sat in the middle.
"Take that down," I said.
"It's the center of the case."
"I'm wearing a turtleneck in it. I look like a substitute teacher."
He took a pen out of his pocket and drew a small crown on my head.
"Better?"
"Worse."
He left it.
For three days he worked from the armchair at the foot of my bed with the laptop on his knees.
On the second morning I asked for index cards.
He brought me four hundred.
I sat propped on three pillows with the cards in my lap and the clean books open on his laptop.
One card for every job.
The line cooks. The dishwashers. The linen drivers. The night shift at the plant. Then I ranked them.
