My Husband Left Me Dying for Her. I Made Him Regret It novel · Chapter 5 of 32

Chapter 5: Terms

I didn't open the door.

I talked to him through the glass.

"Say that again."

"A wife can't be forced to testify against her husband." He held the coffee up like a peace offering. "You were never his wife. The court says so as of Friday night. Everything you know just stopped being protected."

"So you came to subpoena me."

"I came to tell you before somebody else does. Somebody less nice."

"You hit me with a car."

"I'm aware. I'm trying to make it the second-worst thing I ever do to you."

I opened the door.

I took the decaf.

It was terrible. I drank it anyway.

"Not on this stoop," I said. "The whole block has known me since I was four. Half of them have cousins on Todt Hill."

"My car's right there."

I looked at the gray sedan at the curb. There was a fresh dent in the front fender.

"I'm not getting in that car."

He looked at the dent too.

"Fair," he said.

We walked to the diner on 86th Street, under the train.

It was the one with the revolving cake case.

The waitress had called me sweetheart since the second grade. She called Aaron nothing at all.

We took the back booth.

He ordered pancakes. I ordered toast and couldn't eat it.

"Here's what happens," he said quietly. "My office figures out the annulment by Wednesday. Somebody upstairs gets excited. You get a grand jury subpoena by the end of the month."

"And if I don't answer it?"

"Contempt. They can hold you until you do."

"Pregnant."

"They wouldn't care. That's why I'm eating pancakes with you instead of them."

The train went over. The sugar shaker hummed against the glass.

I took a napkin out of the dispenser and turned it over. I took a pen out of his shirt pocket without asking.
