Chapter 9: Brunch

I watched it three times standing in my socks in the dark.

Arianna in a white sweater with her hair down, the signet ring in every shot.

"She kept his books, so she knew how to hide it," she said, and wiped one perfect tear. "And when she knew he loved me, she made up a baby. She even told his mother she lost it. Who does that?"

The comments called me a gold digger and a psycho.

They called her poor Arianna.

Aaron took the phone back gently.

"The office can ask Pulse to take it down."

"Then it's the fed protecting the thief." I wiped my face with my sleeve. "What day is it?"

"Saturday."

Third Saturday of the month.

I'd started the wives' brunch five years ago. A back room at a restaurant on Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, noon, bottomless mimosas, no husbands.

My phone lit up. Delfina.

"Don't come," she said, before I could speak. "She's hosting it today. Your brunch. She sent the invite at three in the morning with the video attached."

"What time?"

"Mirella."

"What time, Delfina?"

A long breath down the line.

"Noon. I'll save you a chair."

Aaron drove me. He wanted to come in.

"You're a fed," I said. "Half the women in that room have a husband who'd have you followed home. Stay in the car."

"What if something happens?"

"Then you'll have a very good view."

He parked across the street where he could see the restaurant window.

I stopped at a pharmacy first and printed two things.

The ultrasound the clinic had emailed me Thursday, with its date. And the letter from my bank, with its red banner.

At twelve-fifteen I walked into the back room.

Fourteen wives sat at a long table under a chandelier made of wine bottles.

Nobody had touched the French toast.

Arianna sat at the head in my seat, in a pink blouse with the ring catching the light.
