Chapter 15: Summer's Page

I opened the door, and Summer stood on the porch with her son in the carrier and no makeup on.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Not in my father's house," I said.

"I know."

"Posy's asleep."

"I know. I only need ten minutes, Corrine. Wherever you want."

I looked back at Norm.

He had Posy in his arms before I asked.

"I'm going to the store," I told Summer. "Norm needs milk and coffee. You can talk in the parking lot."

She nodded and went back to her car.

The grocery on Third Street was half full for a Saturday.

I parked Norm's truck at the far end, and Summer pulled in two spaces down and got out with the carrier.

We stood between our cars with the cold coming off the lake.

"I'm selling the house," she said.

"Your lawyer already told mine."

"I wanted to say it myself."

"Say the rest."

She set the carrier on her hood and kept one hand on the handle.

"I'll tell you why. You won't like it."

"I stopped needing to like it on the third of October."

She laughed, a short wet sound.

"You always had everything," she said. "I said that in the hospital, and I meant it as an excuse. It wasn't. It was just true."

"I had a bad apartment and a student loan."

"You had Norm. He drove two hours the night you had Posy. My mother wouldn't cross a street for me."

I didn't answer.

"You had a man who looked at you across the room, and it didn't matter whether you'd done anything. Brent was the part of your life I could reach. I told myself it was love. It was reaching."
