Chapter 15: The Hearing
Family court was a small room with a flag, a bench and four rows of wooden seats.
By ten to nine, all four rows were full, and people were standing along the back wall.
I recognized half of them from my lawn.
Hazel sat behind me with the baby in a sling, and the pan stayed in her bag, which she said was a concession.
Alastair sat in the last row, alone, with his hands folded.
He had said he would not say a word, and he had kept it.
Brennan came in with his lawyer and his mother.
He wore the navy suit and a fresh shave, and he looked at me once, with wet eyes.
His mother did not look at me at all.
The judge was a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain.
"I have a petition," she said, "alleging the mother is unstable. Counsel?"
Brennan's lawyer stood and played the Terrace Takedown on a screen.
There I was at the country club with my daughter on my arm, saying, "I'm still Mrs. Montgomery. Enjoy him."
He played it twice.
"Your Honor, this is a woman who ambushes her husband at a family brunch," he said. "She locks him out of his home. She holds a public trial on a lawn."
"Mr. Montgomery's counsel is quoting a very popular video," said the judge, dryly.
A few people in the rows coughed into their sleeves.
My lawyer stood. She was a small woman with a gray braid, and she had not smiled once since we met.
"We'd like to play something too," she said.
She played the tape from the apartment.
It ran through Brennan's voice saying, I needed a wife who would stand next to me and make it look right.
