Chapter 18: The Floor and the Ribbon
Stian's hill was steep, and I climbed it in ten minutes with my hands in fists.
Stian walked beside me and said nothing.
He had come out of the hardware store across the street the moment Kendra said his name, and he'd read my face and just turned uphill.
We came around the last bend, and there was the gray car.
It sat crooked in his drive with frost on the windshield.
Clinton sat on the porch step in the same green sweater he had worn at the cabin.
He had not slept.
His eyes were swollen and his hair stood up on one side.
There was a long envelope on his knee, and a flat folder under his arm.
He stood up fast when he saw us.
"Dawn," he said. "Please. Five minutes."
Stian stopped at the foot of the porch and folded his arms.
He did not move or speak.
I walked up two steps, so that we were level.
"You drove all night," I said.
"I had to see you."
"You've seen me."
"I brought the title to the car." He held out the folder. "It's in both our names, but I signed it over to you. And a letter. I wrote it in a rest stop, and I wanted you to read it before you decided anything."
"I've already decided."
"Just read it."
"What does it say?"
He swallowed.
"That I'm sorry. That I was scared. That I started it for one reason, and then I couldn't stop, because the first time my father thanked me for the heat I felt like a man. You made me feel small, Dawn, without trying. You were always so good at everything."
