Chapter 23: Marjorie's Table
Marjorie had rented a one-room apartment above the hardware store, for a week, in a town where she knew nobody.
Ellie drove me there on the second of January and refused to come up.
"I'll be in the car," she said. "With the heater. And a bear claw."
"You're not worried?"
"I'm worried about the bear claw. It's going to be lonely."
The stairs were narrow and smelled of paint.
Marjorie opened the door before I knocked.
She was in the charcoal coat.
I had not expected that.
She stood in it, with her silver bob combed and her pearls on, and the empty gift box sat on the kitchen table behind her with the lid beside it.
"Come in," she said. "There's coffee. It's not good."
"I'm sure it's fine."
"It isn't. Sit down."
I sat at the little table with the box between us.
She poured two cups and sat across from me, not touching hers.
The room had a narrow bed, a hot plate, and one window that looked at the harbor.
Her suitcase lay open on the floor with her cardigans folded in it.
"I'm told it's the only apartment in Bayfield that takes a week," she said.
"It's a nice view."
"It's a view of a lake. My husband is selling his father's cabin. He doesn't speak to me, you see. He leaves a plate on the counter and goes out to the garage."
I said nothing.
She looked at the coat sleeve on her arm.
"I wore it every day since the twenty-fifth," she said. "It's warm. I'm told that's what it was bought for."
