Chapter 13: Open the Door
Stavros did not raise his voice.
He crossed the office floor in his charcoal overcoat and stopped on the far side of the desk.
He looked at the doctor's letter in my hand, and then at the yellow paper in the other.
"Put those down, Kali," he said.
"No."
"They are the house's."
"They have my father's name on them," I said.
"And one of them has your name on it, in a doctor's typing."
Two men had come up the steel stair behind him.
They were Eleni's drivers, big and bored, in black overcoats, and they stopped inside the glass door and looked at the floor.
I understood that Stavros had brought them for the look of the thing.
He did not need them to touch me.
He had never needed anyone to touch me.
"You are carrying my son," he said.
He said it flatly, in front of his drivers, as if reading a bill of lading.
"My mother's doctor will confirm it by Easter.
"The market will hear that the house has its grandson.
"You will go back to Park Ridge tonight and sit where you are put."
I looked at him.
I thought of the long table, and the chair beside the help, and the way he had turned a page of the newspaper while his mother said what I was for.
