Chapter 15: The Hotel Ambrose

Katja's POV

Desmond played the recording in the kitchen at half past eight, standing, with the phone flat on the table between us.

I listened to all of it.

When Selene's whisper came, I did not look away from the phone.

"Your wife did grab me. That part was real."

"I did," I said.

"Katja."

"I did grab her wrist. I've never said I didn't." I pushed the phone back across the wood. "She let go of the rail herself, and now we have it in her voice."

"I know," he said. "I know, and I should have asked her three years ago."

He reached for my arm.

It was a gentle reach, the kind a man makes toward a woman he wants to hold up.

I stepped out of it.

"Not yet," I said.

His hand stayed in the air.

"Not because I'm angry. I want to do this standing on my own feet. If you carry me through it, I'll never know if I could have walked."

He lowered his hand slowly.

"Then I'll stand where you can see me."

"That's all I want."

At ten we sat in a grey room at the police station, with our lawyer and the same young officer and his sergeant.

The sergeant listened to the recording with his arms folded.

He listened to the nurse's sworn statement, which our lawyer had taken at the diner, with his mouth tight.

"Ms. Baird's complaint about threats is closed," he said at last. "There's no evidence of any. The old assault is three years past and was handled by the parties. If I were her, I'd call a lawyer."
