Chapter 23: Seven Terms
I went home on a Sunday, with one suitcase and a folded piece of paper.
Desmond opened the door before I had finished knocking.
He had not slept much, I could tell.
He wore a gray sweater, and his hair stuck up in the back.
"You used your keys?" he said.
"I wanted to knock."
"It's your house."
"I know. I wanted to knock anyway."
I carried the suitcase into the hall and set it down, and we stood facing each other under the lamp.
"I have terms," I said.
He straightened as if he were about to be sworn in.
"Go ahead."
I unfolded the paper.
My handwriting ran down it in black ink, in the careful hand I used for covers.
"One," I read. "You never manage me again. If you think I'm in trouble, you ask."
"Yes."
"Two. When I mind something, I say so, out loud. When you mind something, you do the same. Neither of us goes quiet and calls it peace."
"Yes."
"Three. Sundays are for my mother. All of them."
"I'd like that."
"Four." My voice caught, and I went on. "The room at the end of the hall. The one with the north window. I want it kept for something, and I don't know what yet."
He understood.
I watched him understand, and his face did something that I had no name for.
"Katja."
"I'm not saying it's for her, or for him. I'm saying that I want a room we don't use yet."
"We'll keep it," he said, hoarse. "As long as you want."
"Five." I looked at the paper. "No courthouse. If we do this again, we do it in a place with a tablecloth and my mother and Marit, who will cry and deny it."
