Chapter 6: Somebody Wrote It Down

Marit lived on the third floor of a walk-up in Logan Square, and her kitchen table had a burn mark in the shape of Ohio.

I put the Mercy envelope on it, and then the badge card, and then a pint of the ice cream she liked.

She looked at the ice cream first.

"You came with a bribe," she said.

"I came with a favor."

"That's worse."

She pushed her braid over her shoulder, pulled the chart out of the envelope and began to read.

She was a charge nurse in an emergency room on the other side of the city, and she read fast and with no sympathy for the page.

I waited.

She turned a page.

She turned it back.

"Say the dates again," she said.

I said them.

"And the part about the mother-in-law."

"She told the desk not to call the family."

"Katja." She tapped the blue handwriting. "That's not a mistake. Look. 'Mother-in-law at the desk, asked that the family not be called.' Somebody wrote that down on purpose."

"Why would a nurse write it down?"

"Because someone told her to leave it off the chart, and she put it where it would stay." Marit looked up. "Charts are where nurses hide things they aren't allowed to say. A note like this one means she knew it was wrong."

"Could she have been wrong?"

"A husband in the building and nobody calls him?" Marit shook her head. "Not on that unit. Not unless someone with a board seat stands at the desk and says no."

I stared at the burn mark on the table.

"Hester sits on Mercy's board," I said.

"Of course she does."

"She stood by my bed and told me he knew."

"And you believed her."

"I was bleeding," I said. "I believed everyone."
