Chapter 9: Terms

Katja's POV

I woke up because someone was breathing in my room.

It was dark, and the hall light was a pale stripe across the floor.

Desmond was sitting against the foot of the bed with his knees up and his tie pulled loose.

The Mercy chart was open on the boards beside him.

I looked at it for a moment, and then at him.

"You went through my desk," I said.

"It fell." His voice was hoarse. "I'm not going to say I didn't read it."

"What time is it?"

"Almost two."

I sat up and pulled the blanket around my shoulders.

I was not afraid.

I had expected to be.

I had imagined this moment so many times that now it was only quiet.

"Nine weeks," he said.

"Yes."

"You were pregnant."

"I was going to tell you that night. At the party, after the toast. I had a speech." I almost laughed. "It was a terrible speech."

His face moved, and he turned his head away.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he said into the dark.

"When?"

"After. In the hospital. After the divorce. Any time in three years."

"I thought you knew."

He turned back.

"What?"

"Your mother stood by my bed at four in the morning," I said. "She held my hand. She said, 'Desmond knows, dear. He knows what happened to you, and he's decided to stay with Selene.' And then she put a pen in my hand."

Desmond's mouth opened.

Nothing came out of it.

"I signed a statement saying I pushed Selene," I said. "I signed a clause that says if I ever make a scene about her, the trust stops paying for my mother. I signed it because I thought you had looked at me, bleeding, and chosen her."
