Chapter 24: Gran's Porch

At five o'clock the cottage porch was gold with low sun.

Gran's two rocking chairs stood where they had always stood.

I took the one on the left, with my daughter asleep on my shoulder.

Pia sat on the top step with a beer and a camera.

She had announced that someone in this family had to document things.

At ten past five a gray car came up the lane.

Kristin stopped at the bottom of the steps and did not come further.

She had a diaper bag and the baby carrier, and the baby was awake, with a fist in his mouth.

His hair was dark gold and his eyes were gray.

"It's his first weekend," she said. "He eats at six and at ten. He doesn't like the blue blanket."

Anders came out of the house.

He had flour on his sleeve from Pia's bread.

He stopped in the doorway.

"Hello, Kristin," he said.

"Hello."

She held out the carrier.

He took it with both hands, very carefully.

He sat down on the top step beside Pia and looked at his son.

"Hi," he said, in a voice I had never heard.

The baby looked at him.

Then the baby blinked, and I swear he frowned.

"He has your whole face," said Kristin.

"I hope not."

"I'll pick him up Sunday at four."
