Chapter 3: Treatment or Exorcism

Two men in her bed, a laptop open, and a knock at the door. Ends on a thud on the stairs.

I took Willem up the service elevator, because it was the only one that didn't pass the dining room.

"Who is red?" he asked, with his hoodie still zipped to the chin.

"A client."

"Who is green?"

"A different client."

"Bea, I'm blue."

"You're the most important one," I said, and I kissed him until the elevator reached the fourth floor.

I put him in the spare room at the end of the hall and promised a full explanation at breakfast.

He was too tired to argue, which is how I knew he loved me.

At a quarter past ten I was in my own room in my pajamas with my laptop open.

The Q3 proposal had been due Friday.

There was a knock, and then there was a second knock, slightly after the first, in a different rhythm.

I opened the door.

Sterne stood on my left in a silk robe, holding a black medical bag.

Jax stood on my right in a T-shirt that said Property of Nobody, holding a bottle of wine and a silk scarf.

"Tuesday is mine," Jax said.

"It's Sunday," I said.

"Then Sunday is mine."

"Sunday is nobody's," Sterne said. "I checked the chart."

"The chart has one rule," I said. "One slot, one man."

They looked at each other, then at the slot, which was Sunday and empty because I had planned to sleep.

Neither of them moved.

"Fine," I said. "Come in. Don't touch my laptop."

For half an hour I worked, with a doctor on one side of the bed and a rock star on the other, both scrolling their phones.

It was the quietest my room had ever been, and the warmest.

At ten forty-five I closed the laptop.

"Right," Sterne said, and put his phone face down.

"Right," Jax said, and did not.

Sterne reached me first.

He slid the strap of my camisole down my shoulder with one finger and kissed the skin it left.

"Diagnostic," he murmured against my collarbone. "Hold still."

"You say that every time."

"It's true every time."

He laid me back against the pillows and pushed my pajama shorts down, and his mouth went where his hands had been.

I put my hand in his hair and my head went back.

Jax sat against the headboard watching with the scarf wrapped around his knuckles, and he did not look like he was sorry about anything.

"Look at you," he said quietly. "That's the face I came here for."

"Jax."

"Give me your wrists."

I gave him my wrists.

He wound the silk once around them, loose enough to slip out of, and he kissed the inside of my arm.

Sterne's tongue found the place that made me stop breathing, and he stayed there until I said his name out loud.

Then Jax pulled me over his lap, and I had Sterne's mouth on my neck and Jax inside me from behind, slow and deep and unhurried.

Jax's hand tightened on my hip.

"Demon," he said, in my ear. "Come out."

I laughed so hard I came, and he swore, and Sterne held my jaw and kissed me through it.

At eleven forty-two there was a soft knock on the door.

All three of us froze in a very unprofessional arrangement.

"Bea?" Linnea said, from the hall. "It's Linnea. I wanted to apologize about dinner."

I pulled the scarf off my wrists and a robe over my shoulders and opened the door a hand's width.

She stood there in a long white nightgown holding a mug of tea, her eyes shining.

"I shouldn't have said that about being ignored. Please forgive me."

"It's nothing, Linnea," I said. "Don't worry about it. Get some rest."

"You're sure? You look flushed."

"The radiator," I said.

She smiled, nodded, and glanced past me, down the hall toward the staircase.

I closed the door at eleven forty-four.

Behind me, Jax said, "Radiator," in a voice of such deep admiration that Sterne had to put a pillow over his face.

We finished what we had started, in a different order, and slept in a pile.

At seven minutes past two, something heavy hit the stairwell below us with a long, dull thud.

All three of us woke up.

Nobody moved.

"Raccoon," Jax said, into the pillow.

"We're on the second floor of a penthouse," Sterne said.

"It's a New York raccoon."

I listened for a while longer.

There was nothing else, and I was warm and boneless and very tired.

I went back to sleep.
