Chapter 11: Her Own Chart

Dr. Ames saw me at eight the next morning, before his first patient.

I went alone.

Daniel stayed with the kids at Winnie's, because I asked him to, and he nodded and didn't argue.

The receptionist took me straight back.

His office had one window, a green couch and a wall of books about the mind.

He was in his sixties, with gray hair and tired kind eyes.

He stood when I came in.

"Mrs. Pierce. I wondered if you'd come."

"I'd like my chart."

"Of course." He didn't hesitate. "I should tell you your sister called me last night."

"Of course she did."

"She said you were unwell. That you'd had a relapse and might say things that weren't true."

"What did you say?"

"I said she was not my patient." He looked at me over his glasses. "You are. And you're an adult, with a legal right to every page. I should have given it to you two years ago."

"Why didn't you?"

"Your husband asked me not to. Your sister asked me, too. I thought it was my place to say a year, and then I let it be longer."

"That isn't an apology."

"No. It's not." He took a thick file from the drawer and laid it on the desk. "I'll step out. Take as long as you need."

He closed the door softly behind him.

I sat down on the green couch with the file in my lap.
