Chapter 15: The Kitchen

I read the first line of Claire's post three times, and then I turned my phone face down on my knee.

I could have read the rest.

Two hundred people were reading it right then, and I knew what it said without finishing.

"Winnie says she has the kids all night," Daniel said quietly. "She says, and I'm quoting, don't come get them."

"Take me home."

"To Winnie's?"

"To our house."

He started the car.

Neither of us said a word for the whole drive, and the whole drive I looked at his hands on the wheel.

The house was dark.

The kitchen light came on when he flipped the switch, and I stood in the doorway of the room where I had cut a thousand birthday cakes.

His coat hit the floor.

"Laura, are you sure?"

"Rule one," I said. "I'm breaking it."

I took two steps and grabbed his sweater in both fists and kissed him.

He made a rough sound against my mouth, and then his hands were in my hair, and he kissed me back hard, with a sound in his throat.

His mouth was hot, and he tasted like the coffee from the staff room, and I didn't care.

He turned me and set me back against the counter, and the edge hit my hips.

"Say it again," he said against my jaw.

"Take it off."

"Say you want me."

"I want you, Daniel. I've wanted you the whole time. Take your sweater off."

He yanked it over his head and dropped it, and I put both palms on his bare chest.

He was warm, and his heart was going hard under my hand.

He unbuttoned my blouse with unsteady fingers, one button, then two, then he got impatient and pulled it open.

My bra was plain and gray, and he stared at me until I felt it in my knees.

"God, look at you."

"I haven't been looked at in a long time."

"That's my fault." He put his mouth on my collarbone, then lower, over the top of my breast, and I tipped my head back against the cabinet.
