Chapter 27: The Second Mile Curve

Claire's blue hatchback went out of the church lot with one wheel on the curb.

"Daniel."

"Go," Winnie said, and put Bea on her own hip. "Both of you. I've got the babies and the caseworker."

Daniel's car was parked on the grass.

I got in the passenger side before he had the door closed.

"She'll go home," he said. "She'll pack."

"She won't go home."

I knew it the way I had known the guardrail.

"Left at the light," I said. "Take the lake road."

He looked at me once.

Then he turned the wheel.

The lake road ran gray beside the water under a clearing sky.

The first mile was nothing.

At the second mile, the road bent hard to the right, and the new guardrail came up silver, forty feet of fresh bolts.

Claire's hatchback sat on the shoulder with its hazards on and its driver door open.

Daniel stopped behind it.

I got out.

My head did not ache, and my hands did not shake.

I walked to the rail.

Snow had been falling that night, thick and wet.

I had been driving too fast.

I had a phone in my hand, and I looked at it, at a man's arm and a woman's hand, for one second too long.

The curve came.

I remembered the wheel going light, and the sound of the old rail giving, and the long slow roll.

And I remembered what came after, all of it, whole, for the first time.
