Chapter 29: The Board Meeting

Claire had signed herself into Lakeshore on Saturday night, and she had asked me for nothing.

That was why her complaint was dead, and why the county's caseworker was coming to the meeting with her folder instead of a case.

I had not called Lakeshore back yet.

I did not know what I would say to my sister, so I put the phone in the glove box and drove to the school.

The board met Monday at four in the cafeteria, under a banner that said Spring Concert, Save the Date.

I sat in the second row in my good blue blouse with my purse on my knees, looking at my husband's back.

He stood alone at the microphone in the same gray cardigan he wore on band days.

The county's caseworker sat at the end of the board table with her folder shut.

Six board members faced him.

Behind me, about thirty people had come, parents and teachers and a few neighbors from the church lawn.

I had told Daniel on Sunday night that he could ask me to speak for him.

He had said no.

"You told me I don't get to decide what you can carry," he said. "So I'm asking. May I carry this?"

I said yes.

The chairwoman cleared her throat.

"Mr. Pierce, the complaint alleges you are unfit to work with children because your household is unstable. The complaint's author is no longer a party. The board will hear anything you wish to add."

"I wish to add one thing," Daniel said.

He took a piece of paper from his pocket, looked at it, and put it back.

"My wife was in a car accident three years ago and in a psychiatric hospital for eleven days. I'm saying so with her permission."
