Chapter 17: Heath Comes to Lunch

Melina's POV

On Tuesday at noon the cafe was full, and I was in the corner with my laptop, drawing a bakery's new logo.

Amber sat across from me with a bowl of soup she hadn't touched.

She had started coming in every day at eleven.

She never said why, and neither of us asked.

"Heath's wife called me this morning," she said. "She said her father's people met on Monday. They took his seat as regional director. His badge stopped working at nine."

"Good."

"He's called me forty times."

"Don't pick up."

"I haven't." She turned the spoon over. "I keep thinking he'll stop."

The bell over the door rang, and she stopped talking.

Heath came in.

He was wearing the navy quarter-zip, and it was wrinkled.

He had shaved badly.

He looked around the room with his easy smile.

Then he saw Amber.

"There you are, sweetheart."

The tables near the door went quiet one by one.

He crossed the room and sat down in the chair beside her without asking.

"Heath," I said.

"Melina, give us a minute. This is between Amber and me."

"It's not."

"Amber." He took her hand. "You've been through something terrible. Anybody would be confused. They got to you, and they put words in your head. I understand. I'm not angry."

"Let go of me," she said.

"I want to take care of you. You and the baby. We'll go away for a while, somewhere quiet, and when it's born we'll sort everything out. But first you need to tell Cory it was a misunderstanding. That Melina pushed you. That you were upset."
