Chapter 12: My Wife

Nobody breathed.

Lionel's glass was still in the air.

"Nathaniel," he said softly. "You're upset. Sit down, and we'll discuss it privately."

"I'm not upset."

"You're overtired."

"I'm married," Nate said.

A sound went through the hall.

Nate stepped off the platform.

He walked down the center aisle between the long tables, in his dark suit, past two hundred faces turned to follow him.

He didn't hurry.

The Chancellor's daughter watched him go with her hand pressed to her chest, and she was smiling.

Nate stopped at Table Nine.

He looked at me, and then at the ring box on the white cloth, and at my left hand.

He took my hand and lifted it, and turned and held it up in the air for the whole room to see.

Two gold bands caught the candlelight.

His and mine.

"This is my wife," Nate said, and his voice carried to the stars on the ceiling. "Her name is Roxana Larkin."

Bridie made a noise.

"We were married at the Whitcomb County courthouse three years ago, on a Tuesday, with a clerk and a stranger for witnesses. She wore a blue dress. She worked double shifts so I could finish school. She has been at every table I've ever sat at, in everything but name."

He turned his head toward the platform.

"I never told you, Father, because you'd have done exactly this."
