Chapter 15: The Board Room

The boardroom was on the second floor of Founders Hall, behind a door with a brass plate that said TRUSTEES.

I opened it at eight minutes past eight.

Nine people sat around a long oak table with coffee cups and folders.

Lionel Hargrove sat at the head in a gray suit, and the Chancellor sat at his right hand.

Every face turned toward me.

"I'm sorry," a man in a blue tie said. "This is a closed session."

"I know," I said. "I'm Roxana Larkin."

Nobody said anything.

They had all been at the dinner, and they knew exactly who I was.

"My mother is in Bed Twelve at Maple Court," I said. "At nine o'clock this morning, you're going to throw her out."

"Miss Larkin," Lionel said gently. "This is an administrative matter. I'm sure the office can arrange a time to speak with you."

"I'm speaking with you now."

"Then I must ask you to leave."

"No."

Nate had stopped just inside the door behind me.

I could feel him there, a step back, with his hands at his sides.

I had asked him to stay quiet and let me do this.

It was the hardest thing I'd ever asked him.

"My mother has heart failure," I said. "She breathes through a tube. Two years ago somebody on this board paid part of her bill, and I thought it was a kindness."

I looked at Lionel.

"Then I married his son in front of two hundred people, and the kindness went under review the same night."
