Chapter 5: Terms
He came in at two in the afternoon, when the lunch rush was over.
I was in the kitchen stacking mugs, and I heard the bell over the door and Dolly's voice saying, "Sit anywhere, hon."
Then I heard a man's voice say, "Coffee. One sugar."
My hands stopped on the mugs.
I knew that voice better than my own.
I walked out with the pot, and Stanley was sitting at the counter in a gray sweater, unshaven, with dark circles under his eyes.
He had a phone in his hand.
He looked up, and for a moment his whole face came apart.
"Tamara," he said.
Dolly's head turned from the grill.
"You two know each other?"
"No," I said. "Dolly, I'm taking my break."
I pointed him toward the back door, and he followed me out into the lot without a word.
Carl was standing by his garage door with a wrench in his hand.
He took one look at the man behind me and didn't go back inside.
I stopped by the dumpster, where nobody could see us from the street, and turned around.
"How did you find me?"
He held up his phone.
"I put a tracker in your car after the brake line," he said. "Nobody else has any record of that car. The app still shows a blue dot. It says Waukegan."
"You tracked my car for seven years."
"I know how that sounds."
"It sounds like you were guarding a decoy."
His jaw moved.
He didn't deny it, and I was almost grateful.
"Here are my terms," I said. "You don't say my name. You don't touch me. You don't buy me one single thing."
