Chapter 10: Tell Me to Stop

Mitchell let the engine idle and looked at us for a long time.

Alec set me on my feet without hurry and stood between me and the gate.

I stepped around him.

"Mari," Mitchell called, in a mild voice. "Odette asked me to come make peace. She said you'd be here."

"Did she."

"Is this a game to make me jealous?" He nodded at Alec. "Because it worked, and I'd like it to stop."

"It isn't a game."

"Get in the car, Mari."

"I signed divorce papers eleven days ago, Mitchell. You signed them first."

"They were a shock." He said it patiently. "Odette had them drawn up so you'd see what you'd lose. I'll have her withdraw them Monday."

"Don't."

"Mari, it's paperwork."

"Don't withdraw anything. Don't touch it. Don't ask Odette to touch it."

He frowned, and for one second a thought nearly crossed his face.

His phone rang on the dashboard.

*Odette.*

He glanced at it, and at me, and picked it up.

"Yes. No. I'm at the ranch. Yes, I found her." He covered the phone. "I'll see you Saturday, Mari. Wear something nice for the quartet."

He put the car in reverse and backed down the drive.

I watched the taillights until the dust took them.

Alec drove for twenty minutes without a word.

He parked outside a small gray house at the edge of the airfield, with a hangar behind it and no neighbors.

He turned off the engine and sat with his forearms on the wheel.

"Not yet," he said.

I stared at him.

"You're still legally his wife, he thinks you're his, and I flew the machine that left her on the road. I want you to make that choice when none of it is pressing on you."

"Not yet," I said.

"Yes."

"You said the 30th, when the jet lands. I'm not waiting for a jet." I unbuckled my belt. "I spent three years waiting for a man to hear me, Alec. You listened to me for ten minutes in a gas station lot."

He didn't move.

"You told me not to touch you until the jet landed," I said. "I'm taking it back. Tell me to stop."

"Marisa."

"Tell me."

His breath went out of him.

"No," he said. "God. No."

Inside, he shut the door and pressed me against it.

His mouth came down on mine, and this time there was no waiting in it.

I kissed him back with everything I had.
