Chapter 20: Wheels Up

Alec's POV

Mitchell came to my door on Thursday night with a sheet of paper and read it to me on the step.

"Effective immediately, the suspension of Captain Alec Driscoll is lifted," he said. "Signed, Mitchell Bradbury, Chief Executive. I wrote it myself. I've read it six times."

"The regulator still has my certificate under review."

"The regulator hasn't pulled it. Only my company did, and my company is me until Saturday afternoon." He held it out. "I can't give you back that night. I can give you the seat."

I took the page and said nothing, because I had nothing that matched it.

On Saturday I was in the hangar at five, walking around the jet in the dark.

I touched the leading edge, the tire, the fuel cap.

I had walked around that airplane a hundred times, and I'd never once been afraid of it.

At six the hangar door slid open and two cars pulled in.

Odette came out of the first in a cream suit with her braid pinned up and her dog at her heel.

A woman in a gray blazer climbed out behind her with a leather doctor's bag.

A man in a captain's jacket stepped out of the second car, a charter pilot with a tired face, carrying a flight case.

"Good morning!" Odette said brightly. "Captain, thank you for coming at the last minute. The jet is ready?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Then let's get our guests on board."

I came out from under the wing.

"Good morning, Odette."

Her smile held for a full second longer than it should have.

"Captain Driscoll. You're suspended."

"I was."

Mitchell walked out of the dark hangar office with Constance beside him.

He was holding a clipboard.

"Captain," he said to the charter pilot. "I'm Mitchell Bradbury, the Chief Executive of this company."
