Chapter 14: Load-Out

By midnight, the road crew had sat down.

All six of them, in a row on their flight cases along the loading dock, with their arms folded and their work gloves in their laps.

It was a cold Milwaukee night.

Behind them, the Riverside's back doors stood open on an empty stage, and a hundred and forty cases waited to be loaded onto three trucks.

The trucks had to roll by five a.m. to make Chicago.

Brendan stood at the foot of the ramp in his good coat.

His eyes were still red from the performance.

He had changed his voice.

It was the one he used on the crew when the microphone was off.

"This is a joke," he said.

"No sir," the prop woman said pleasantly.

"I fired Jack Brady. I fired him at eleven o'clock. He's done. He can collect his things in the morning."

"That's what we heard," the sound engineer said.

"So who is running this load-out?"

"Nobody," said the gum chewer. "We don't take orders from a man who just forgave his wife on stage and then fired a guy for it."

"It's not about her!"

"It's all about her," said a rigger.

Brendan took a breath.

I stood at the top of the ramp, next to Jack, with a blanket around my shoulders and Maisie holding my elbow.
