Chapter 5: The Sponsor Dinner

The Hearthside dinner was in a private room on the top floor of the hotel, with a long table, a string quartet and a dozen people who could end my husband's career with a phone call.

I wore the green wrap dress and my grandmother's earrings.

Brendan wore his charm.

"My wife," he told the chief executive, "is the reason I get out of bed."

The chief executive was a gray-haired man who had built a bed-and-pillow empire and wanted the world to believe in fidelity.

He took my hand in both of his.

"The famous muse," he said. "I read the book twice."

"Roz wrote it," Brendan said, and everyone laughed, because he said it like a joke.

I laughed too.

I did not correct him.

Tallis sat across from me, three seats down, in a red dress and a fresh blowout.

She had not told Brendan about the dock.

I knew because he would have said something.

Instead she had watched me through the whole appetizer course.

When the soup came, she leaned in.

"Roz, I love your earrings," she said, loud enough for the table. "Are they old?"

"They were my grandmother's."

"They look it." She smiled. "You're so brave to wear them. I'd never. I'm terrible with sentimental things. Numbers are more my speed."

A few people chuckled.

"Roz is the creative one," Brendan said kindly. "Tallis is our numbers girl. Which is how we keep the lights on."

"We'd be lost without her," I said.

Tallis's eyes sharpened.

"I mean it," she said, to the chief executive. "The muse is wonderful. She just doesn't do math. Last week I had to remind her what a deductible was."
