Chapter 9: Wall of Light
The lawyer's office in Detroit was on the eleventh floor, with a view of a parking structure and a bowl of peppermints.
"This is a lot of paper," the lawyer said.
She was Maisie's friend from the bar, sixty, in a navy blazer, with reading glasses she wore on a chain.
"It's eight years," I said.
"It's a house, a company, a book and a tour. And you want it filed under seal?"
"I want it filed where he can't find it until I'm ready."
She pushed her glasses up.
"Sealed filings aren't magic," she said.
"A clerk can talk. A process server can talk. If he finds out before the date you want, he can freeze your half of the company and say you abandoned him."
"Then we need a date."
"What date?"
"The day after Chicago."
She wrote it down.
She wrote a lot of things down.
My name, his name, the date of the marriage, the account where my grandmother's four hundred thousand dollars had gone in, and the lawyer who had notarized it.
"The company's half yours in writing," she said at last.
"That's the good news. He signed it himself. The bad news is that the email you found tells me he knows it, and he's planning a restructuring on the day after the finale."
"That's exactly the day I want to file."
She looked at me over her glasses.
"You want to beat him by a day."
"I want to beat him by a night," I said.
She stamped three copies.
"Sign here," she said, "and here, and initial every page."
I signed Rosalind Penhallow-Schneider fourteen times.
When I finished, I was surprised to find my handwriting was steady.
I walked out of that office a woman who had told the truth to a stranger for the first time in a month.
