Chapter 12: The Seal
Ji-han did not ask the Leader about the powder.
He told himself a man was allowed one secret in a marriage.
Ji-han himself had been keeping a hundred.
That evening the Leader went to the training yard to let the physician look at his shoulder.
Ji-han went to the Leader's study and opened the desk drawer.
He was not proud of it.
The flat wooden box sat at the back, behind a folded cloth, where the Leader had pushed it.
It was plain pine with a brass catch.
Ji-han thumbed the catch and lifted the lid.
Inside lay a jade seal wrapped in black silk.
It was the Leader's seal of office, the square green stone every Alliance order had to carry.
Four characters were carved on the face.
JIN HYEOK-RYEONG, LEADER.
The seal was dry and clean.
There was not a smear of red paste on it, not a flake, and the dust on the lid was thick.
No one had used it in a long time.
The silk was knotted with a single white thread.
White was the mourning color.
Ji-han held the seal of the most powerful man in the Nine Sects, wrapped for the dead.
He stood there for a long time.
He counted, because he always counted.
The count had stopped being a doubt a while ago.
Nobody wrapped a living man's seal in mourning white.
Someone had buried the name and kept wearing it.
The answer was sitting in Ji-han's hands, and he had an enormous urge to put it down.
He wrapped the silk, shut the lid, and slid the box back where it had been.
If he looked at the answer directly, he would have to do something about it.
