Chapter 16: The Card

Drew's POV

I pulled on jeans and went down to the yard to be angry in private.

Joy had said what she came to say, and Hannah had gone to work with her jaw set.

Delaney had been to the clinic and asked for her shifts.

That meant Delaney wanted to know where Hannah would be on Saturday.

I wanted to know why.

I did not have to wait long.

At noon the silver car pulled in beside the truck, and Delaney got out in a cream coat with a card case in her hand.

My cousin looked at me over a stack of moving blankets.

"Go get lunch," I said.

He went.

"Mr. Tilden," Delaney said. "Drew. I came to see if you've thought about Saturday."

"I've thought."

"Good. I'd hate to have to give the records to some outfit that doesn't care what they carry."

"Forty cartons," I said.

"Forty cartons, eight sharp." She smiled. "And I wanted to say, it doesn't have to stop there."

She slid a card out of the case and held it between two fingers.

It was heavy, cream-colored, with the firm's name embossed across the top.

"This is the vendor line for Marsh and Aldous," she said. "Every move the firm makes in a year. Four offices. Deposition rooms, the archive, partners' houses."

"That's a lot of work."

"It's most of a year. A truck like yours would never have to look for a job again."
