Chapter 22: A Drawer

Drew's POV

I gave her a week.

I did not say so, and I did not make a point of it.

I moved my boots out of the doorway of my room and left the door open.

I made breakfast, and she ate it.

I waited for the sentence I had been rehearsing for two months, the one that began with "I think I should find my own place."

She worked her shifts and came home and kissed me in the kitchen, and on the seventh night she stood in the bedroom with a folded sweater in her hands.

"Drew."

"Yeah."

"Which drawer is mine?"

I looked at her.

I was sitting on the end of the bed with one boot off, and I forgot the other.

"Pardon?"

"I've been living out of two suitcases for seven weeks," she said. "I'd like a drawer. The top left one, if you can spare it."

"That one has my winter socks."

"Then I'd like the top left, and your winter socks can go somewhere else."

I got up and pulled out the drawer.

I carried the socks across the room and dropped them in the closet.

I came back, and she was laughing, and she put the sweater in the empty drawer and pushed it shut with her hip.

"That's it?" I said.

"That's it."

"I had a speech."

"I know." She came over and put her forehead against my chest. "You mumbled it in your sleep on Tuesday."
