Chapter 4: Closing Night

The brass key from Joan was in my coat pocket, and the photograph of the DANNER INN sign was in my head, and Eli had promised me forty-eight hours before he told me anything.

I did not wait quietly for them.

The Danner Gallery held its autumn opening two nights later, as if nothing had happened, and I went to it.

I had told the guard to let Bryce keep the key until Friday, and Bryce used every hour of it.

The annex was full when I walked in.

Sixty guests, a string trio, waiters in black with trays of champagne I had paid for.

Every wall held a canvas with a small red dot beside it.

Camille stood in the center of the room in a silver dress, laughing at something a collector said.

She had no brooch on.

She saw me and her laugh stopped halfway.

Bryce was across the room with a glass in his hand.

He did not look surprised.

He had been waiting for me, and that worried me more than anything he could have said.

Eli came in a step behind me with the building manager and two men in grey suits.

"Remember," Eli said under his breath. "Plain and short."

"I know."

I took a champagne flute from a passing tray, walked to the little stage where the trio played, and tapped the glass with my ring.

The music stopped.

"Good evening," I said. "I'm Hannah Prescott. This building belongs to me."
