Chapter 7: The Service Corridor

The ballroom erupted.

Flashes went off at the foot of the stage, and somebody near the front called my name.

I stood with my hand still half raised for the microphone.

Bryce held it out of my reach, and for one second I wanted to hit him.

Then a hand closed around my elbow.

"Come with me," Eli said.

"I'm not leaving the stage."

"You're leaving it right now, or you'll answer that in front of four hundred people with nothing to say."

He was right, and I hated it.

I let him walk me through the curtain, down the back steps and into the service corridor behind the ballroom.

The door swung shut and the noise dropped to a hum.

Steel carts stood against the wall.

A dishwasher ran somewhere out of sight.

I turned on him.

"Is it true?"

"Hannah."

"Did my father do that? Did he drive that man to kill himself?"

"Your father bought a debt and collected it. It was legal."

"You said that already. I'm asking if it was true."

He said nothing.

I stepped closer.

"Look at me and say it was nothing. Say my father was a good man who did a normal thing."
