Chapter 23: A Stranger Buys Dinner
On Monday morning I took the envelope out of my cello case and carried it to the courthouse myself.
The clerk stamped it, looked at the two signatures, and said, "Ninety days, ma'am. It's final on the ninetieth."
"Thank you."
"Everything all right?"
"Yes," I said, and was surprised that it was true.
At three that afternoon I played for the conductor of the Harbor Symphony in an empty rehearsal room.
I played Bach, and an Elgar passage she asked for, and then she held up a hand.
"That will do," she said. "Third chair. You start with the first concert of the season."
She slid a contract across the desk with my name on it.
Aubrey Linford.
I signed it with my own G, and I did not cry until I reached the stairs.
On Friday, at seven in the evening, someone stopped in front of my table at the diner next to the church.
It was Thad's favorite place, a long steel-colored room that smelled of coffee and onions, and I was alone in a booth with a book.
