Chapter 16: Never Ask
I pushed through the glass doors in time to hear the head nurse say, "Mr. Nordquist, that's the third check."
"I know it's the third check," said Ernest.
His voice had gone thin.
He stood at the desk with his checkbook open, and his right hand was moving without him.
The pen scratched across the page.
He tore the check out and laid it on the counter.
"That covers the east wing," he said.
"For the year."
The head nurse looked at the check, then at him, then at me.
"Good morning, Ernest," I said.
He turned around.
For a moment I thought he might have a stroke.
"What did you do to me?" he said, very low.
"I came here to pull my money out of this place," said Ernest.
"I told the driver in the car, I told myself on the stairs."
"I walked in to cancel the account, and I'm standing here writing checks."
"I didn't do anything," I said.
"You promised to look after me and my mother for life, in front of your wife."
"I'm holding you to it, that's all."
